You Have Been Bracing for Years and You Don’t Know It

by John Sutherland, Founder of Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration
You are not relaxed. You have just stopped feeling it.
Right now, as you read this, your shoulders are higher than they need to be. Your jaw is doing something. Your breath is moving through the top third of your lungs instead of the bottom. There is a low hum of effort running through your body that you stopped noticing a long time ago โ because it never stops, and the nervous system filters out what doesn’t change.
This is not a metaphor. It’s physiology.
Most adults carry persistent resting tension in the muscles of the neck, jaw, diaphragm, and pelvic floor โ tension that never fully releases, even in sleep. The average nervous system spends most of its day in mild sympathetic activation: the state designed for short bursts of threat response, not continuous occupancy. Over time, proprioception โ your sense of where you are in space โ recalibrates around the distortion until the distortion becomes the new neutral. You stop feeling the tension because your brain has stopped reporting it. The signal hasn’t disappeared. It has been reclassified as background.
This is why stretching doesn’t fix it. Why a good night’s sleep doesn’t fix it. Why even most massage doesn’t fix it. You cannot release what the nervous system has decided is normal. The pattern reasserts itself within hours because the predictive model underneath it hasn’t changed โ and that model is the real target.
The nervous system isn’t a passive receiver. It’s a forecasting engine. Every posture, every breath, every micro-adjustment of tone is the output of an ongoing calculation: what does this body need to be ready for? If the answer has been threat, load, vigilance, compression for long enough, the body organizes itself accordingly, and keeps organizing itself that way until something gives it a reason to update.
That’s where my work begins.
Adaptive Bodywork is what I built to give the nervous system that reason. It’s slow, specific, and informational โ not about forcing tissue or chasing symptoms, but about feeding your system enough new, accurate, unhurried input that it revises its assumptions about what your body is actually dealing with. When those assumptions update, the holding patterns lose their job. Tone redistributes. Breath drops. The diaphragm moves through its full range for the first time in years. Posture reorganizes without being told to.
What follows is not subtle. I’ve watched people come off the table and reach for words that sound almost embarrassed โ I forgot I could feel like this. I didn’t know I’d been clenching that. I feel like I got my body back. The clinical version is less poetic: parasympathetic tone increases, interoception sharpens, movement economy improves. The experiential version is that you stop fighting yourself.
Most people don’t realize this is available to them. They’ve accepted the tension, the shallow breath, the tight hips, the wound-up shoulders as the cost of being an adult with responsibilities. They’re not wrong about the cost. They’re wrong that it has to be paid indefinitely.
If any of this is landing โ if you recognized your own shoulders in the first paragraph and they haven’t dropped since โ that recognition is information. Your nervous system has been trying to tell you something for a while.
This is the work that answers it.
