A fluid representation of the human body in motion
Life is filled with challenges that require adaptation. Whether it’s the first day of school, a new job, or even a hobby like gardening, our ability to adapt to stress is a fundamental aspect of human physiology and medicine. This concept is not only applicable to everyday life but also plays a crucial role in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and injury recovery.
Understanding Adaptation in the Human Body

Before and after strength training
Take the example of strength training. The progressive overload repeatedly stressing the muscle causes it to adapt, resulting in an increase in strength and a change in muscle size (hypertrophy). This principle of adaptation is at the core of Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration (ABSI), a form of manual therapy that evolved from Rolfing and the work of Ida Rolf.
A Case Study: George’s Journey with ABSI

George at work
Let’s consider George, a 70-year-old gardening enthusiast with mild lower back pain. Instead of telling George to stop gardening, we at Adaptive Bodywork decided to help his system adapt to the demand of gardening.
After a thorough examination, we implemented a program tailored to George’s needs, focusing on stretching his hips and improving the endurance strength of his core muscles. We started with isometric exercises and gradually added more functional movements.
The best preparation for gardening was to actually garden. George began with short sessions and slowly increased his time, always mindful of his symptoms and biomechanics. By the end of the summer, he was able to garden for 45 minutes without pain!
The Role of ABSI in Rehabilitation

Creating space around the hip
George’s success story illustrates how the principles of adaptation can be applied to injury recovery. His biomechanics, joints, muscles, and nervous system all adapted to a careful level of applied stress, guided by the expertise of ABSI.
For many, failure to recover from a musculoskeletal injury stems from either not challenging the tissue to adapt or pushing too hard, causing further damage. This is where ABSI’s unique approach comes into play.
Why Choose Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration?

Adaptive Bodywork Soft Tissue Mobilization 1 (STM1)
At Adaptive Bodywork, we understand the importance of balance. Our one-on-one sessions, either on the table or on the floor, are designed to improve mobility, range of motion, and efficiency of movement. Our methods are informed by the work of Tom Myers and Anatomy Trains Structural Integration, ensuring a scientifically-backed approach.
Whether you are an athlete, a yoga practitioner, a physiotherapist, or simply someone looking to get out of pain, ABSI offers a path to recovery and enhanced well-being.
