Experiencing the Flow State

Hello Everybody, this is John Sutherland, the founder and owner of Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration (ABSI). Today, I want to discuss a concept that deeply resonates with all of us – the memory of our peak physical form. We all remember a time in our lives when we felt invincible, when our bodies were in perfect harmony, and our minds were sharp and focused. This state of being, often referred to as the ‘flow state’, is a testament to the incredible capabilities of the human body and mind. But as we age, this state seems to drift further away from our grasp. Why is that? And more importantly, what can we do about it?

Embracing Our Peak Physical Form

Enjoying physical activity in our prime

As we age, our bodies and minds undergo changes. We become less resilient, our metabolisms slow down, and our neurology becomes increasingly down-regulated due to chronic stressors. This is a natural part of aging, but it doesn’t have to be an inevitable decline. Our societal norms, driven more by profit than well-being, have led us to adopt lifestyles that are not conducive to our longevity and overall health. This disconnection from our vitality is not something we should accept as normal.

The Inevitable Changes of Aging

Still killing it 20 years later

The key to reclaiming our flow state lies in understanding that we are not the same people we were 20 years ago. Our bodies have evolved, and they now require different inputs and treatments. Evolutionary biologist Michael Rose points out that after the end of our first reproductive cycle, mother nature has done her job, and natural selection no longer confers us with any survival advantages. From this point, we are on our own. If we fail to modify our behaviour and return to a more ancestral or hunter-gatherer diet, we will be on the path to insulin resistance, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome with all its manifestations. To avoid this inevitable outcome, we are obliged to make a dramatic paradigm shift, somewhere around the age of 30-45.

Adopting Ancestral Dietary Habits

The ancestral or hunter-gatherer diet

The next step is to stimulate our bodies to rebuild and withstand the rigours of modern society. This involves three basic elements: progressively lifting heavier weights to build a robust structure, engaging in High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), and ensuring that we have sufficient rest and recuperation necessary for optimal super-compensation to occur. These simple training strategies, coupled with sports and activities we enjoy, will nourish our bodies and our sense of community.

Stimulating Our Bodies for Resilience

Building better bodies with Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration

However, there’s one crucial aspect we haven’t discussed yet – our support system, the body-wide matrix of connective tissue known as fascia. This fascial support matrix is the richest neurological organ in our body, with over 250 million mechano-receptors. It is our ability to sense, orient ourselves in our environment, and navigate it efficiently and effectively. Over time, the quality of this feedback system can be impacted by repetitive motion, inactivity, trauma, and injuries, leading to a state of disconnection known as Sensory Motor Amnesia.

Understanding Our Fascial Support System

Remapping your body image

This is where Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration comes in. ABSI is the most powerful and transformative structural therapy available. It enhances your posture, mobility, and range of motion. Perhaps more importantly, by working with these 250 million mechano-receptors, we can remap them to your body image, enhancing your spatial awareness, proprioception, balance, and coordination. This reconnection to our environment allows us to become more complete individuals on every level – physiologically, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually.

The Power of Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration
