So, before this can happen, an everyday commitment to making a habit of great posture is of great importance. Without great posture the level of skill required for elite athletic performance can not happen.
What we as therapists have to do with the support structure, i.e. fascia, is to remind it on a regular basis, through its postural change and through its modified loading strategies.
Fascia needs a constant reminder to change, to change the way it is loaded, and to change the way that the client is moving. What is going to ultimately give the client fascial change is repetition and loading, and however they get around to accomplishing that.
Fascia responds long term and it responds to long term repetitive input because it’s asking cells, fibroblasts, to lay down more connective tissue. So you are effectively retraining and rebuilding yourself. I think that’s what we have to think about, fascial retraining, fascial realignment that is going to take a long period of time. This will require a lifestyle change considering that the half-life span of non-traumatized collagen has been shown to be 300-500 days.
Our role as therapists is to get clients to a better functional space rather than necessarily changing or releasing fascia within a 60 minute session. The 60 minute can be used to demonstrate the potential benefits of working longterm, and the necessity of realigning or reconfiguring their fascial support network, so that it will ultimately serve them better on a continuous basis. It is absolutely essential the client leaves the session with a sense of empowerment and the directives necessary to achieve the desired goals. The client must assume the responsibility of acquiring the desired outcome by basically becoming the desired change on a full-time basis. This intention will remain essential until such a point that both the tissue and the behaviour are effectively being governed at a reflexive level.
Tensioning tensegrity on the performance continuum
Once our client or athlete has achieved a state of balance or optimized bio-tensegrity. We then have the option of modifying the tension of that system to make it more or less responsive and reactive. This is achieved through forms of training that tune the tensional members of the bio-tensegrity. This will effectively move your client along the continuum from recreational mover towards high performance competitor or vice versa. There is always going to be a trade off that sacrifices some comfort for performance. Stiffness for performance, slack for comfort and recreation but with less structural efficiency.
The human body in fluid and in constant flux
In any movement we perform, we are shape-shifting the body through the myofascial system, as each part is reliant on the entire structure for its ability to move.

When we restore better function we increase a person’s movement potential.
One very interesting quality of fascia is its ability to distort and return to its original form. In movement and our anatomy, form follows function and function influences the form.
Many aspects of our life, such as stress, emotions, long term sitting or repetitive motion may cause a distortion that is not being restored. If one tension member becomes tenser than the others, it will distort the shape into a form that is no longer functional.
Through specific movement protocols and techniques such as Adaptive Bodywork and Intrinsic Sensory Integration, we can affect the distortion and restore the functional form. Seeing the body as a whole tensegrity volume and understanding how to alter the distortions, increase mobility, elastic recoil, proprioception and motor control. We can increase our client’s ability to actualize their movement potential, become pain-free and be mobile into the later stages of life..
