Hello everyone, Every week I will be taking a familiar health related topic, one that we have all heard of and presume to understand. These fundamental topics will be reviewed in light of the latest science to demonstrate how exactly they are involved in the Pain Paradox. Today I’ve got some great tips that will help you understand some of the all important, and fundamental ways, you can literally drink from the fountain of youth. Today we will discuss the interplay between hydration and aging and the steps you can take to prevent aging prematurely.
People are increasingly unhappy with their status quo. They remember being more comfortable in their bodies and wonder what has changed. The guilty party seems to be time. But how exactly has the passage of time managed to compromise our feeling of youth, resilience, health and wellbeing?
The typical response is, aging, I am getting old. Yes, but age is just the passage of time. It is our behaviour during the passage of time, which ultimately determines who we have become and what we are feeling today.
The question becomes how can we modify both our environment and our behaviour to change the quality of the mechanical input acting upon us so that we move away from the path of deterioration and we move towards the path of restoration.
The goal of these Pain Paradox emails, is to provide you with the latest information in pain science and care. This will allow you to make informed decisions about your pain, decisions will that empower you to transform your pain care journey, positively and sustainably.
Hydration and Aging

We evolved from the sea and all biological life remains a dance between fluid and fibre. We are somewhere between 63 and 67% water depending on how old and how fat we are. The fibre is a restrictor of movement and it organizes the water in our bodies.
The process of getting old is essentially the process of drying up, so hydration is really really important.
One of the most important things for fascia, is that the fascia gets hydrated. Did you know that your achilles tendon is 63% water, the rest of it is holding things together, but the water is holding things together as well.
Water is the medium of exchange inside your fascia. So how do you get hydrated inside your fascia? Don’t be under any illusions – drinking water alone will not cure the brittleness in your lumbar fascia or replenish the fluid in your achilles tendon. That is because the fluid absorption in fascia is not linked to the gastrointestinal tract.
Hydrate by Squeezing the fascial sponge

The fluid only replenishes itself when the tissue is squeezed out like a sponge – i.e. the tissue – if it is not squeezed regularly enough, it is unable to absorb the new, fresh water that it needs. The question is, how much of what you drink get’s to the tissues needing hydration? The answer depends on how well you squeeze the fascial sponge.
Adaptive bodywork is perhaps the most efficient way to squeeze the sponge, but a big muscular effort also helps squeeze the sponge, and there are other things like fascial rolling, or using an SMR tool that gets in there and hydrates the tissue, or you can use your own fingers to go into places that are dry and sticky and squeeze the sponge of the tissue.
When you squeeze the water out of the tissue, then more water comes back in and brings healing proteins with it. So it doesn’t matter how much you drink, it matters where the water goes. That’s what hydrates the body’s tissues including the fascia, and prevents you from aging prematurely.
