Feed Your Physiology, Not Your Addiction

Today, as I was leaving the track after a sprint workout, a young athlete stopped me.

“How old are you?”

“Sixty-eight.”

He smiled. “I hope I look like you when I’m your age.”

Then came the question I hear more and more often.

“What’s your secret?”

I laughed. “There isn’t one. You simply have to understand your diet.”

He looked puzzled. “So you just eat less? You’re hungry all the time?”

“No.”

That exchange captures the nutritional confusion of our time in miniature. Most people assume that staying lean, healthy, and athletic requires a constant battle against hunger. My experience has been exactly the opposite. I stopped fighting my physiology and started paying attention to what it was trying to tell me.

The Biggest Misunderstanding About Nutrition

Somewhere along the way, we were taught that getting lean means constant deprivation — count calories, fight cravings, eat six small meals a day, carb-load before you train, and assume that if you’re hungry, you’re doing it right.

My experience runs opposite to all of it. I don’t count calories, I don’t battle cravings, and I don’t spend my day thinking about food. It wasn’t always this way. For years I ate the way most people are told to eat — small, frequent meals, carbohydrates before training, snacks to keep my energy up. I was hungry constantly. I thought about my next meal while I was still eating the current one, and I assumed that was simply what discipline felt like.

Today, food occupies very little mental space. Not because I’ve become more disciplined — because I stopped fighting a physiological signal and started paying attention to what it was actually telling me.

Want vs. Need

Here’s the part of the title we haven’t unpacked yet.

Most people spend much of their lives depending on a steady supply of glucose, simply because that’s how they’ve taught their metabolism to operate. Glucose strongly activates the brain’s reward pathways, and repeated dependence on it can produce patterns that resemble other forms of dependence. When that steady supply is interrupted, cravings often appear, along with irritability, fatigue, brain fog, and a sense of urgency that feels like an emergency even when it isn’t one.

That’s the distinction hiding inside this entire discussion. What people want to eat and what their physiology actually needs are often two very different things. The craving for a specific food at a particular moment isn’t always your body requesting a nutrient — often, it’s a glucose-dependent metabolism demanding its next fuel source, dressed up as hunger.

Feeding your addiction means responding automatically to that craving. Feeding your physiology means something different. It means giving your body the raw materials it actually needs to build, repair, recover, and function well, regardless of what happens to sound appealing in the moment. That’s not an emotional decision. It’s a physiological one.

What My Body Was Actually Asking For

The concept that changed my thinking more than any other is the Protein Leverage Hypothesis, first proposed by researchers Stephen Simpson and David Raubenheimer in a 2005 paper published in Obesity Reviews, and supported by numerous studies since.

The idea is surprisingly simple. Humans appear to regulate protein intake much more tightly than fat or carbohydrate. Protein is the nutrient the body actively prioritizes, while fat and carbohydrates are regulated far more loosely.

The practical consequence is significant. If your diet is diluted with calorie-dense, protein-poor foods — as is true of much highly processed food — your body may continue signalling hunger until its protein needs are met, regardless of how many calories you’ve already consumed. You’re not necessarily weak-willed. You’re nutritionally under-fed while being calorically over-fed. The hunger is real, and it’s doing exactly what it evolved to do.

When I restructured my diet around nutrient-dense, protein-rich foods, that signal became satisfied much earlier instead of remaining switched on throughout the day. My hunger virtually disappeared, my energy stopped swinging between highs and lows, and food stopped dominating my thoughts. That wasn’t discipline. It was physiology finally receiving what it had been asking for all along.

The Second Piece: Becoming Fat-Adapted

Protein satiety explains why I no longer spend my day chasing food. It doesn’t fully explain why I can comfortably go long periods without eating while continuing to train and compete. That comes from a second adaptation — becoming fat-adapted.

Here’s the mechanism. I deliberately limit carbohydrates as part of an overall dietary pattern that has helped me maintain insulin sensitivity rather than progressing toward insulin resistance. That distinction matters. When people become insulin resistant, their ability to access stored body fat becomes impaired, and they become increasingly dependent on a continual external supply of glucose simply to maintain stable energy. That’s one reason so many people feel they have to eat every few hours.

When insulin sensitivity is maintained, the body retains the ability to draw on its own stored fat between meals. Instead of relying almost exclusively on what was eaten most recently, it can access the energy it already has available. That’s the central shift. My body isn’t constantly waiting for the next meal to arrive — it’s drawing from stored energy throughout the day, including during many training sessions.

The greatest surprise wasn’t physical. It was psychological. The constant background conversation about food simply disappeared. I stopped wondering when I would eat next, stopped worrying about carrying snacks everywhere, and stopped feeling anxious if a meal was delayed. Those weren’t mindset changes. They were physiological consequences of no longer depending on a continual glucose supply.

Protein leverage and fat adaptation solve two different problems that reinforce one another. Protein satisfies the body’s drive to obtain adequate amino acids. Fat adaptation reduces dependence on continual glucose intake. Together, they dramatically reduce the constant hunger and cravings that so many people simply accept as normal.

Why the Food Environment Fights You

None of this happened by accident. Modern food is engineered for repeat consumption. Food scientists devote enormous resources to creating combinations of refined carbohydrates, industrial fats, salt, texture, flavour, and aroma that are exceptionally rewarding to eat. At the same time, many of these foods contain relatively little protein — the very nutrient most likely to promote satiety.

This isn’t a conspiracy theory. It’s product development. The objective isn’t simply to make food taste good. It’s to make people want another bite, and then another.

The result is a food environment where constant hunger, fluctuating energy, excess weight, insulin resistance, and prediabetes have become so common that many people assume they’re simply part of normal life. They aren’t. That doesn’t mean everyone responds identically, but it does mean our modern food environment often pushes people in the same direction. What we’ve normalized is often the predictable outcome of a food supply optimized for continued consumption rather than long-term satiety.

I’m Not Asking You to Take My Word for It

I’m not interested in telling anyone how they should eat. Nutrition isn’t a religion. I’m simply encouraging people to question a few assumptions that most of us accept without ever testing for ourselves — that being hungry all day is normal, that eating every few hours is necessary, and that a calorie is just a calorie regardless of where it comes from. Run your own experiment. Pay attention to how you actually feel, not how you’ve been told you should feel.

One thing I want to be clear about is that performance was never my primary goal. Health was. I wanted stable energy, stable hunger, and a metabolism that wasn’t dependent on a constant supply of glucose. I wanted to build a physiology that worked with me instead of against me. Performance came later, and it emerged naturally once that foundation was in place. That’s why I believe no athlete’s health should ever be sacrificed at the altar of performance.

At sixty-eight, I still train hard and compete in Masters sprinting, and I’m proud of what I’m able to do. But sprinting isn’t proof that my approach is the only correct one. It’s simply one example of what became possible after I focused on restoring metabolic health first.

The Same Principle Runs Through the Work I Do

The more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve realized that nutrition and my work as a Structural Integration therapist are driven by exactly the same principle. For years I’ve helped people reduce unnecessary restriction in their bodies — tension, compensation, poor movement strategies, patterns that developed over decades because the body adapted to whatever environment it was given.

Structural Integration isn’t about forcing the body into an ideal position. It’s about removing interference so the nervous system, connective tissue, and movement patterns can organize themselves more efficiently. I’ve come to believe metabolism works the same way. We’re often taught to overpower our physiology with discipline — ignore hunger, count calories, fight cravings, push harder. But perhaps the better question is whether those signals are telling us something useful. What if the goal isn’t to silence the body, but to understand it?

The conversation at the track wasn’t unusual. I hear versions of it almost every week from clients who are one, two, and sometimes three decades younger than I am: “I hope I’m in that kind of shape when I’m your age.” My answer is always the same. You probably can be — not because there’s a secret or exceptional genetics, but because the body remains remarkably adaptable for far longer than most people imagine. The earlier you begin giving it what it actually needs, the more time it has to respond. Years will pass either way. The only question is whether you’ll spend them reinforcing the same patterns or creating better ones.

Your body is communicating with you every day — through hunger, energy, pain, movement, and recovery. For years I overrode those signals because I assumed I knew better. Eventually I started listening instead.

That young athlete at the track wanted a secret. There isn’t one. There’s only the willingness to pay attention to what your body has been trying to tell you all along, and the willingness to begin today instead of someday.
