The end of the pain cycle

Are you tired of the endless cycle of pain and temporary relief? Have you tried everything from chiropractic treatments to deep tissue massages, yet the pain persists? It’s time to explore a new approach to your body’s healing and well-being. Welcome to the world of Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration (ABSI), a holistic approach to manual therapy that goes beyond symptom management to address the root causes of your discomfort.

Understanding Manual Therapy Paradigms

The 3 Paradigms

Before we delve into the specifics of ABSI, let’s briefly discuss the three paradigms of manual therapy as described by Jeffrey Maitland Ph.D and Jan Sultan, Advanced Rolfing Instructors at the Rolf Institute. These paradigms are palliative, corrective, and integrative (wholistic).

Palliative therapies, such as Swedish Massage and trigger point therapy, focus on alleviating symptoms at the local level. Corrective therapies, like Soft Tissue Joint Mobilization techniques and HVLA thrusting techniques used by chiropractors, aim to correct the causes of symptoms. Corrective Bodywork also falls into this category, focusing on specific issues but not addressing the body as a whole.

However, the third paradigm, the holistic approach, is where Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration shines. This approach cultivates integration, balance, and harmony within the person as a whole.

The Power of Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration

The hands-on nature of the ABSI therapy

ABSI is a holistic form of manual therapy that uses manual techniques and movement reeducation to influence and organize a body around a vertical gravitational axis. This approach was originated by Dr. Ida Rolf, who coined the term Structural Integration. ABSI practitioners are heavily influenced by the Osteopathic tradition and borrow techniques from movement teachers like Moshe Feldenkrais, Joseph Pilates, and F.M. Alexander.

Unlike corrective work, ABSI places strong emphasis on opening the breath to create adaptability in the body. It then works on opening superficial layers of the “neuro-myofascial net,” differentiating, lengthening, or broadening deeper structures, and integrating both deep and superficial layers. This systematic approach helps the whole body relate to specific issues, creating adaptability in your body and helping you find support from as far away as the feet.

One of the unique aspects of ABSI is that it has a beginning and a definite end. Once you complete a full series of sessions, you need to allow your body at least a year to integrate the changes introduced during the series. This approach is not only more holistic than Corrective Bodywork but also more centered on your personal growth.
