This week I have a fascinating new concept to explore with you called bioplasticity. It is not just the brain that changes itself – it’s time to embrace bioplasticity. Bioplasticity takes over where neuroplasticity left off. Rather than referring uniquely to the brain and its neurones, bioplasticity extends itself to include the incredible adaptive capacity of every single system in the human body. The nervous system is not the only system that has a remarkable capacity to change in response to demand. The human body readily responds to changing environmental stresses and it does so in very predictable ways.
People are increasingly unhappy with their status quo. They remember being more comfortable in their bodies and wonder what has changed. The guilty party seems to be time. But how exactly has the passage of time managed to compromise our feeling of youth, resilience, health and wellbeing?
The typical response is, aging, I am getting old. Yes, but age is just the passage of time. It is our behaviour during the passage of time, which ultimately determines who we have become and what we are feeling today.
The question becomes how can we modify both our environment and our behaviour to change the quality of the mechanical input acting upon us so that we move away from the path of deterioration and we move towards the path of restoration.
The goal of this Pain Paradox series is to provide you with the latest information in pain science and care. This will allow you to make informed decisions about your pain, decisions will that empower you to transform your pain care journey, positively and sustainably.
Bioplasticity – How the body responds perfectly to the demands placed upon it

Our movement behaviour or rather our lack of movement is directly responsible for taking our bodies in a direction that is less than optimal, potentially leading to pain and dysfunction over months and years.
You have to understand that the body responds perfectly to the demands that are placed upon it, for better or for worse. Unfortunately more often than not, we unintentionally make the wrong demands of our body. The demands to which our body responds, are any of the various forms in which stress may present itself. This may range from any variety of poor ergonomics, psychological stress, injuries, accidents, surgeries or repetitive motions, etc.
The body deals with these stresses by attempting to fortify or solidify the fascial support system to better cope with the stress, and it does this very predictably, but at what price?
Biotensegrity – the ideal

Ideally our support structure is a perfectly resilient biotensegrity architecture, one that is capable of distributing any strain encountered by the body evenly across the entire structure, absorbing and diffusing any sudden blows or impacts, thereby alleviating or diminishing the trauma to any single point in the system.
Compensations – dysfunction and pain – the problem

Life introduces stressors to the system that are necessary for growth and progressive development. The body responds by laying down collagen to reinforce, support, create stability and strength in the system.
Too much support can compromise mobility. As tissues densify and become more solidified, movement quality can be impaired resulting in altered and reduced movement behaviours.
The body and muscles, however, will adapt to doing jobs they were not necessarily designed to do, and over time that becomes their new default, or a compensation used to work around a less than ideal situation.
There comes a point however, where your body is no longer capable of further compensations, it has exhausted its adaptive capacity. This is the point where the dysfunction and pain surfaces and you have to turn to someone to restore your fascial system.
