Introduction to Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration (ABSI)

Adaptive Bodywork Structural Integration (ABSI) is a comprehensive multi-session protocol that focuses on deep, slow manipulation of the fascia and myofascia, coupled with movement re-education. ABSI evolved from the pioneering work of Dr. Ida P. Rolf, who originally developed the concept of Structural Integration. The ABSI method integrates principles from the Anatomy Trains Myofascial Meridians, as explored in Tom Myers’ book Anatomy Trains. This perspective views muscles not as isolated units but as interconnected parts of a larger system that spans the entire body.

🔹 Understanding the ABSI Series

Each session in the ABSI series addresses different fascial planes or sets of relationships within the body, working from superficial to deep layers and then back again. The aim is to unwind strain patterns within the body’s locomotor system, restoring natural balance, alignment, length, and ease.

The Anatomy Trains Myofascial Meridians – are a conceptual framework that views muscles and connective tissues as interconnected chains spanning the entire body, rather than isolated units, thereby influencing overall movement and posture.

🔹 Common Strain Patterns

Common strain patterns can result from inefficient movement habits, poorly designed environments, injuries, surgeries, and traumatic episodes. These patterns begin as simple gestures but can become ingrained as neuromuscular habits, which then alter posture and the body’s connective tissue structure.

🔹 The Role of Connective Tissue

The ABSI method leverages the unique properties of the body’s connective tissue network, which encompasses everything from fluid blood to solid bone, along with various supportive structures in between. Muscle movements are mediated through this connective tissue network, which maintains our shape and integrity.

The body’s myofascial support system – is a continuous, interconnected network of muscles and fascia that maintains structural integrity, facilitates movement, and distributes mechanical stress throughout the body.

🔹 The ABSI Process

The ABSI process begins with an interview to assess your health history and goals. Sessions are typically conducted while you wear underwear to allow for the observation of your standing and walking patterns, essential for assessing your current structural state.

Body Reading and assessment – is the process of visually and manually evaluating a person’s posture, alignment, and movement patterns to identify imbalances and areas of tension in the body’s myofascial system.

🔹 Project Approach to ABSI

Think of the ABSI series as a project with a beginning, middle, and end, rather than an endless therapy. The first four sessions target superficial layers, the next four focus on deeper core structures, and the final four integrate these layers into everyday movement. Benefits will continue to unfold even after the final session.

🔹 Conclusion

I am available to answer any questions you may have about the ABSI process and hope you will consider undertaking this transformative work. As Tom Myers, the developer of Anatomy Trains, aptly put it, ‘Change your body about your mind.’ I invite you to embrace this opportunity for change.
